Notice to Parents: 11/2016

24 June 2016

Dear SPS family

Term Two has been a very busy term. Our learners have excelled both in the classroom and on the sports field. Our staff continue to go beyond the call of duty to provide opportunities for our learners to fully develop themselves. I am very proud of my staff and learners and would like to thank them for their sterling efforts this term. My sincere thanks to our parents and SGB for your support towards the school

We bid farewell to Mrs Savrimuthu, who served the school for thirteen years. Mrs Savrimuthu will be sorely missed and we would like to thank her for her loyalty and dedication to SPS. Mrs Savrimuthu’s replacement will be done by the Department Of Education and will take effect next term. We would like to thank Mrs Preiss for substituting in Mrs Savrimuthu’s absence. We also bid farewell to Ms Maharaj and wish her well in her new teaching post in China.

Congratulations to Megan and Luke Peter on the arrival of their bundle of joy, “Baby Olivia Blake Peter” who was born on 16 April 2016.

Condolences to Mrs Lamprecht and family on the passing away of Mr Pieter Lamprecht on 20 June 2016. Our prayers are with the family.

Mum’s and Dad’s morning

A very successful mum’s and dad’s morning were held, where our mums and dads had a chance to spend some time in the classroom and enjoy some fun and games on the sports field.  Thank you to all parents who attended these successful events.

Academics: Senior Primary

Horizon Maths Challenge:

All learners from Grades 4-7 wrote the first round of the Horizon Maths Challenge, organised by Star College, towards the latter part of Term One. Eleven of our learners from a total of 5318 candidates were then selected to write Round Two (nine hundred learners wrote Round Two) this term.  Three of our Grade 7 learners excelled and were placed in the Top 200. Well done to Colby Gardner (168th), Yolanda Dladla (67th) and Dylan Cox (53rd).  We hope to see more learners participating next year.

Futurewise Maths Challenge

Grade Seven learners participated in the Futurewise Maths Challenge, organised by Lions International.  Schools were invited to submit two teams, comprising two learners in each team.  52 schools (104 teams) participated in this year’s event.  Team A comprised  Colby Gardner and Dylan Cox and  Team B comprised Melissa Fernández-Gómez and Kamisha Govender. Both teams went through to Round 2, with Colby and Dylan reaching the Finals. Well done to our learners.

June Exams:

The June Examinations were written by our Grade 4-7 learners from the 03 June 2016 – 10 June 2016.  Unfortunately, we were bound by Department regulations and could not start the exams sooner.  The exams went off smoothly and most learners were well prepared.  Answer scripts have been reviewed by subject teachers and term marks compiled.  Reports will be sent home at the end of the term.

Our Grade Five learners went on a one-night excursion to Roselands in Richmond.  They were accompanied by Mrs Pillay (HOD), Mrs Provis, Mrs Velayudan and Miss Maharaj.  It was the first overnight excursion for our learners and they coped very well with both the sleepover, and the activities that were offered.

Our Grade Six learners will leave to Spirit of Adventure in Shongweni on a two night sleepover on the 20-22 July 2016 and our Grade Sevens will go to Sweetdale Camp in Ramsgate for three nights on the 26-29 July 2016.

The Senior Primary Department will be busy with the production, ‘The Lion King’ next term.  Dates for both Grandparents’ Tea and the Evening Performances have been set for the latter part of next term and will be available on the Term Programme for Term Three.  Parents and friends of the school, who have any special skills (costumes, make-up, sound, recording, set design, etc) and would like to volunteer their assistance with the production, are to please contact Mrs Pillay at the school.

Extra Murals and Sport

It has been  extremely busy and successful on the sports field this term.  We introduced soccer to Scottburgh Primary for the first time and the support was excellent.  Our netball and rugby teams had a very successful season.  We are also very proud of our nine netball girls who  were selected for the UGU netball team and our four rugby boys who were selected for the Southern KZN Rugby Team.  Our U13 cricket team won the final of the Umdoni and Districts Cricket League and was crowned the 2016 champions.  Jack Gillham is to be congratulated on being awarded the Umdoni and Districts Cricket Player of the Season. Our Netball and Rugby teams participated in the Annual Suid-Natal Sports Festival and did very well. For the first time, our U8 team took part the Inter-school Cross Country. Our athletes performed very well, winning 8 out of the 12 races. We would like to thank Janet Simpkins and Natasha Stanton, two of our parents, who volunteered to train our Grade One and Two learners in Cross Country this term. Our Foundation Phase participated in a fun mini soccer and netball morning at school.  Great fun was had by all and it was lovely to see everyone participating.  One of the highlights of this term with regards to sport, is the number of children taking advantage of the extramural activities offered.  We hope that this continues next term.

Our school took part in an Inter-school Chess Tournament held at Umkomaas Primary School. Four of our learners represented our school and we are happy to announce that Siya Phakati came second and Andy Zhuang achieved first position.

Winter Sports Day:

We held a Winter Sports Day for the first time this term and every learner from Grade 3 to 7 were given an opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities. Mr Fisher, Ms Potgieter and Mr Joubert must be congratulated on organizing such a successful event. This will remain an annual event on our calendar

We would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all the members of the community, who drove a car for us in our annual Sani2C fundraising event.  We would also like to thank the following sponsors who supported the event:

Fizique Fitness Equipment, Mrs Dawood, Mrs Humphries, Mrs Sook, Perfect Water, Poynter Print, Selborne Golf Estate, Hotel and Spa, Tri-circle Hardware.

We reached our target with this year’s Sani2C fundraiser and we look forward to your continued support with the remaining fundraising events this year.
