Dear SPS family
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Term Three has been a term buzzing with activities. A huge thank you to my staff, learners and parents for making this term so successful.
We welcomed a new staff member Ms U. Ramchet to the SPS family. Ms Ramchet settled very well into her new school and we hope her stay with us is a long and happy one.
We had received an overwhelming response for applications – 2017. We successfully completed a series of interviews for all new parents and learners enrolling next year. We are looking forward to meeting our new parents and learners again in November for the orientation.
Condolences: We are still saddened by the passing away of Shaylin Rangasamy, who was a Grade Five learner at our school. He will forever be remembered at SPS.

Academics: Foundation Phase
Grade 3 visit to Spur
The Grade 3 Learners went to the Spur, where they saw the production line in the kitchen. They were taken through the kitchen and learnt about hygiene and cleanliness, especially around food. Thank you to Adrian and his team for being such willing hosts and especially for the free burger and cold drink.
Visit by ‘Paramedics South Africa’
‘Paramedics South Africa’ did a demonstration for the Foundation Phase showing them all their equipment and teaching the learners a few basic first aid skills. Thanks to Shannon and his team for their hard work.
Fire Service Demonstration
The Fire Department did a demonstration for the Grade 3 learners and taught them about basic fire safety. Thank you to the Fire Department for giving up their time to come and show the learners.
Gymbo Kids Performance
The Grade 1’s and 2’s had a performance from Gymbo Kids, where the learners learnt about Stranger Danger and the Child Line emergency telephone number. Thank you to the Gymbo Kids team for teaching the learners about the importance of Stranger Danger.
Academics: Senior Primary
In the first week of term, our Grade Six learners went on a two-night excursion to Spirit of Adventure in Shongweni. The focus of the camp was teambuilding and leadership skills. The learners were accompanied by Mrs S. Pillay (Grade 6 Educator) who was also the co-ordinator of the excursion, and Mr Bartman.
Our Grade Seven learners departed for their three-night excursion to Sweetdale Camp in Ramsgate the following week, accompanied by Miss Towell (Co-ordinator), Miss Ramchet and Mrs Pillay. Our learners enjoyed a successful camp and came back with a renewed sense of confidence, having conquered many fears.
Production: “The Lion King”
The Senior Primary Staff and Learners are to be congratulated on their production of “The Lion King” this term. The Senior Primary Team bravely decided to put together a Production instead of a Variety Concert, much to the delight of all their audiences. The evening shows were sold out and Grandparents’ Tea was a resounding success. A special matinee performance was held on Thursday for Learners with Special Needs from the Open Air and Schola Amoris schools. Scottburgh Primary is grateful to all parents and friends of the school for their contributions to the Production.
I personally would like to thank my entire staff and parents for their support in making this production a huge success. A special thank you to Mrs Pillay, Mrs Provis and Miss Towell and the Senior Primary Team for the many extra hours of hard work and dedication. To save the best for last: our learners. They are our “stars” and they make us proud with everything that they do. Well done to the entire “Lion King Cast”.

Extra Murals and Sport
We had an extremely busy term on the sports field this term. Our soccer boys took part in a friendly soccer league involving some of our local schools. Even though not all the results went our way, the boys thoroughly enjoyed playing competitive soccer, and there was a great improvement from their first game to their final games. Scottburgh Primary hosted its first ever 5 A- side soccer festival in August. Even though the weather didn’t play its part, the festival was a huge success. Fun was had by all and soccer was definitely the winner of the day. Our boys and girl’s teams attended the Creston Soccer Festival. It was the first time our girls’ team played in a match and they did exceptionally well not to lose a single game at the festival. Soccer continues to grow from strength to strength at our school and I am sure next year, it will carry on growing.
We are very proud of our four senior cricket boys who were selected to represent the Umdoni and Districts Cricket Team at the KZN tournament this term. Matthew Crookes, Tristan Deamer, Jack Gillham and Joshua Simpkins will be awarded sport merits for this achievement. Well done, boys.
Scottburgh Primary was the host school for this year’s Interschool Athletics Meeting. The athletes had an excellent day on the track doing Scottburgh Primary proud. A special mention must be made of Christina Stanton, who broke two records on the day. Well done, Christina.
Next term we will be introducing hockey skills for the girls. It will be compulsory for all girls attending this extramural to have a gum guard and shin pads. This is for their own safety. It is not compulsory, but will certainly assist if the girls had their own hockey stick.
Hockey Coach: Please contact the school, should you know of anyone or yourself, who would be able to assist with the coaching of hockey.
The much anticipated Fun Grand Jackpot Competition will start in the second week of the new term. Every class will have a winner. Your child will receive more information about this exciting fundraiser at the beginning of the 4th term.
The AGM was held on Thursday- 29 September 2016. Thank you to the parents for attending the AGM and for your positive comments and inputs. The following resolutions were approved by the parents at the AGM:
- The parents agreed to set the 2017 school fees at R14 700. (A more detailed breakdown on school fees will be sent to parents early next term).
- Over and above the school fees for 2017, the parents agreed to an annual fee of R267 per learner for 2017 towards the Mathletics and Reading Eggs Online Programme. which must be paid to the school on or before 31 December 2016.
- Over and above the school fees, all new learners successfully enrolled at Scottburgh Primary School from 2018 onwards, will voluntarily contribute a once-off amount, not exceeding ten percent of the said current year’s Annual School Fee, towards special development projects at school as determined and agreed by the SGB.
- The parents at the 2016 AGM agreed to a ten percent development fee amounting to R1470 per learner, which will be paid by the parents on the successful enrolment for 2018.
